A Business They Can Their Own
January 27, 2015
With the unemployment rate for people with disabilities at 82%, the need to create jobs for our clientele is greater than ever before.
So Eisenhower Center decided to take the bull by the horns and create its own in-house business - Ike Bites Dog Treats Bakery.
Ike Bites Dog Treats Bakery is run out of the Eisenhower Center, which has about 80 disabled clients. The center's clients mix, bake and distribute the peanut butter and molasses dog treats.
The small, star-shaped treats feature a peanut butter and molasses flavor that dogs love. You can purchase them online at www.ikebitesdogtreats.com.
Debbie Cabanatuan, work services director and overseer of Ike Bites' production, said that up to 25 Eisenhower clients work on making the dog treats. Right now, bakery has the capacity to make up to 2,000 treats a day.
In January of 2014, the first treats went on sale. That month, we sold $25 worth of treats. Since then, sales have sky-rocketed to almost $1000 a month and climbing.
